BI: the biological indicator

A biological indicator is a sealed carrier of hardy bacterial spores, processed through the sterilizer, then incubated to see whether any spores survived. Steam BIs typically use Geobacillus stearothermophilus, chosen because it is among the organisms most resistant to moist heat.
