Do I need a pouch sealer, or are self-sealing pouches enough?
Self-sealing pouches close on a pressure-sensitive strip: no machine, no pre-heat, one fixed size per pack, and nothing to warm up at seven in the morning. A sealer covers the two cases a pre-made pouch cannot — packs longer or wider than any stocked size, and rolls you cut to the length you actually need. If every pack you make already fits the pouch you buy, the sealer adds a step and removes none: fold, align, seal, wait for the beep.

The 12 mm seam is the full width of the heating band, which is what lets the pack peel open at the point of use without the film tearing away from the paper. This is the 200 °C constant-heat model: the head holds one temperature for the whole run instead of spiking per impulse, so the tenth pack of the morning is sealed under the same conditions as the first.
What does sealing cost per pack, against buying pouches?

The roll is tubing, so one cut length makes one pack: a 30 cm pack uses about 30 cm of roll, roughly $0.06 of material before indicator tape — the case of ten rolls prices out at $105.00, or $10.50 a roll and $0.21 a metre. A ready-made pouch of a comparable size runs $0.04 to $0.12 per pack in this range. That is the honest comparison — rolls win when the pack is a size nobody stocks, not when it is a size you can simply buy. The 76 mm roll we stock suits packs up to about three inches wide; the sealer itself takes rolls up to 300 mm.
Which packs should be sealed rather than self-sealed?
Long or oversized loads are the usual reason to own a sealer: orthodontic pliers and long forceps, a handpiece packed with its bur block, instruments that overhang a 7" × 13" pouch. Short routine packs are faster self-sealed, because there is no pre-heat and no alignment step. Clinics running both formats keep the sealer on the bench for the long packs and use pouches for everything else — the machine earns its space on the ten per cent of packs that no pouch fits.
Where do I get the log for sealed packs?
A sealed pack is logged exactly like a pouch: date, cycle, sterilizer, contents. Print the sterilization record sheet, or build your own columns for roll-cut packs in the log generator. Keep the roll lot number with the record — it is what lets a seal failure be traced to a batch of packaging. If you are validating a new pack format before it goes into routine use, ask a sterilization compliance specialist what has to be tested and written down first.
