CliniEco Medical Biological Indicator — 24-Hour Self-Contained, 50-Pack

Daily biological monitoring for Canadian dental clinics — 24-hour results at about $2.20 per test

In-office monitoring — incubate and read on site; no need to send vials to an outside lab.

G. stearothermophilus ATCC 7953 · ISO 11138-3

Daily spore testing — 24-hour results

$109.99 for 50 self-contained biological indicators — about $2.20 per test. Each vial contains Geobacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 7953 spores (≥1.0 × 106 CFU per vial, typical 1.0–1.2 × 106, as stated on each lot CoA), the standard challenge organism for steam sterilization, in a self-contained vial with growth medium for a rapid visual readout in 24 hours instead of 48. In Ontario, the RCDSO requires a biological indicator for each sterilizer on every day that it is used — daily monitoring, not weekly. The weekly baseline is the CDC / AAMI ST79 standard in most US states. Each monitoring day uses two indicators — one test plus one unexposed positive control — so a 50-pack gives about 25 monitoring days.

When the 50-Pack Fits Better Than the 25 or the 100

A test day takes two indicators from the same lot — the vial that runs through the cycle and the unexposed control that must turn yellow for the run to be valid. Work out the year as test days multiplied by two, then pick the box that lands closest to it without leaving you short mid-quarter.

Test days a year Indicators a year 50-packs a year Cost in 50-packs, $109.99 each The same year bought as 25-packs, $69.99 each
25 50 1 $109.99 2 boxes — $139.98
30 60 2 $219.98 3 boxes — $209.97
35 70 2 $219.98 3 boxes — $209.97
40 80 2 $219.98 4 boxes — $279.96
49 98 2 $219.98 4 boxes — $279.96

At $2.20 an indicator the 50-pack sits between the entry box and the yearly box. Choose it when your test calendar is real but not daily, or when you want the ordering rhythm to be quarterly instead of monthly.

Two situations this box is built for

  • Two sterilizers on alternating days. Each unit is tested on the days it actually runs, so the test days roughly double and the box empties at twice the pace. Buying two 25-packs a month for that rhythm costs more than one 50-pack a quarter.
  • A two-month to three-month restock cycle. A practice that runs two or three days a week gets about two to three months of cover from this box, which means four deliveries a year and a single lot number per quarter — easier to file and easier to trace back if a lot is ever questioned.
  • One sterilizer plus a backup unit. If the backup is run only on weeks when the main unit is serviced, the extra test days land in bursts; the 50-pack absorbs the burst without a special order.

When the 50-pack is the wrong box

  • More than 49 test days a year: step to the 100-pack at $1.89 an indicator, because the gap between $2.20 and $1.89 compounds across a year.
  • Under 25 test days a year, or a new routine you have not yet proven: the 25-pack at $99 covers twelve test days and keeps the exposure small.
  • Storage that runs warm or damp: indicator vials belong in a dry place at room temperature, and a box that sits for a year in a utility room is a risk you do not need to take for a few dollars a box.

What one box covers, week by week

Fifty indicators is 25 test days. At five test days a week that is five weeks; at three days a week, about eight weeks; at two days a week, about twelve. Write your own test days a week into that line before ordering — if the answer is over fourteen weeks, the box will outlast your patience before it outlasts the shelf, and the 25-pack is the better rhythm.

The same year, priced against the neighbours

Test days a year Indicators Bought as 50-packs Bought as 25-packs Bought as 100-packs
25 50 1 box — $109.99 2 boxes — $139.98 1 box — $189.00
40 80 2 boxes — $219.98 4 boxes — $279.96 1 box — $189.00

That last row is the honest one: at 80 indicators a year a single 100-pack is cheaper than two 50-packs, but it leaves twenty vials on the shelf. If your test days are steady and the lot date allows it, the larger box wins on price; if the routine is still settling, pay the small premium and keep the shelf light.

How to Read Your 24-Hour Result

Negative — pass The medium stays purple after 24 hours at 56–60 °C (58 ± 2 °C): no spore growth. Release the load.
Positive — fail The medium turns yellow: spores survived the cycle. Re-sterilize everything in that load and re-test before releasing instruments.
Incubation 56–60 °C (58 ± 2 °C) dry-block incubator; read at 24 hours (this indicator is rated for a 24-hour readout, not 48 hours).
Positive control Run one unexposed indicator from the same lot as a control on each day you test; it must turn yellow. If the control does not grow, the test run is not valid.
Reading is visual No reader or UV lamp is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should we run a spore test?
It depends on the jurisdiction. In Ontario, the RCDSO requires a biological indicator for each sterilizer on every day that it is used — daily monitoring. In most US states, the CDC and AAMI ST79 baseline is at least weekly. One 50-pack covers about one month of daily testing for one sterilizer.
How do I read the result?
After the cycle, activate the vial per the included instructions and incubate; read at 24 hours. No color change means no surviving spores (pass); a color change means failure — quarantine the load and re-test the sterilizer.
What organism is used, and why?
Geobacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 7953 — the standard biological challenge for steam because of its high heat resistance. A compact dry-block incubator is available on request.
Can I see the factory documentation?
Yes — we provide the test reports behind the standards listed above and batch certificates of analysis on request. Email alina@clinieco.ca.
Does it work with my autoclave cycle type?
This item is used with standard steam sterilization cycles; confirm the specific cycle against the manufacturer's instructions supplied with each lot.
How should it be stored, and how long does it keep?
Store between 15–30 °C at 30–65% relative humidity, keep away from sterilants, direct sunlight and UV, and do not crush the packaging. Shelf life is 24 months from the date of manufacture.
How often does a Canadian clinic need to run it?
In Ontario, the RCDSO requires a biological indicator for each sterilizer on every day that it is used — daily monitoring, not week.
Which standard does it meet?
Manufactured and tested to EN ISO 11138-1 and EN ISO 11138-3, in ISO 13485-certified facilities.
How long does a 24-hour readout biological indicator take to incubate?
This is a self-contained 24-hour test: after the cycle the indicator is activated and incubated, and the readout is available at the time stated in the manufacturer's instructions for use — around 24 hours. Keep the activated indicator in the incubator for the full period before reading it, and read the result against the control.
Is a 24-hour biological indicator acceptable for RCDSO daily monitoring?
The requirement is about how often you test, not how fast the indicator reads. In Ontario the RCDSO expects a biological indicator for each sterilizer on every day the sterilizer is used — daily monitoring, not weekly — placed in a process challenge device and run for each type of cycle used that day. The weekly interval is the CDC / AAMI ST79 baseline in most US states. A 24-hour readout fits a daily schedule; where same-shift release is needed, a rapid-readout indicator is used instead.
How is this different from the 3-hour indicator and the 5-pack trial?
All three are biological indicators with the same pass-or-fail meaning; the difference is the readout time and the pack size. The 3-hour unit is a fluorescence test for same-shift release, this 24-hour unit suits a next-day schedule, and the 5-pack trial is a small pack to evaluate the routine before committing to a working size.
How many indicators does one test need, and how long should records be kept?
One indicator per sterilizer for each day it is used, plus a control. File the result in a log that matches your facility's records-retention policy, and note the sterilizer, the cycle type and the date alongside it.
