Two arithmetic facts sit behind this table. First, in Ontario the RCDSO requirement is a biological indicator on each day the sterilizer is used and for each cycle type used, which for a five-day clinical week produces roughly 260 tests per sterilizer per year rather than 52. Second, the CDC baseline used in most United States jurisdictions is at least weekly monitoring with a matching control, which produces 52 tests per sterilizer per year. The same reader therefore produces very different consumable bills depending on which side of the border the clinic sits, and a comparison that uses only the weekly figure understates the Canadian consumable exposure by a factor of five.

Locked and Open Ecosystems: The Parameter Buyers Underestimate
A locked ecosystem is not a defect. It is a design choice with real advantages: the manufacturer validates one indicator against one reader, publishes a single set of instructions for use, and supports one troubleshooting path. For a clinic that wants a single supplier relationship and predictable training, that has value.
An open architecture offers the opposite trade: the reader accepts indicators made to a published format, so consumables can be sourced competitively and the reader survives a change of indicator supplier. Neither choice is a compliance question in itself: regulators assess whether monitoring was performed, documented and acted upon, not which brand produced the result. RCDSO requirements are written around process challenge devices, indicator types and documentation rather than manufacturer names.
How Often You Must Test: Ontario Compared with the CDC Baseline
Equipment specifications mean little without the testing frequency they have to serve. The two reference points for Canadian clinics are:
- Ontario (RCDSO standard of practice): “A BI must be placed in a PCD and used to test the sterilizer each day that it is used AND for each type of cycle that is used.” The same standard requires that the daily operation of every sterilizer be reviewed and documented in a log book, retained for at least ten years from the last entry.

Both statements are current. The weekly figure is not a superseded requirement; it is the United States baseline, and a clinic operating in both jurisdictions may need to document to both. If your facility is in Ontario, size the reader against a daily schedule: a four-well reader holds one day of testing for up to four sterilizers, while a single-well unit forces sequential runs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a rapid reader replace a 24-hour incubator?
It can serve the same regulatory purpose faster, but it does not make the conventional path obsolete. A rapid reader returns a same-day answer, which matters when instruments must be released quickly. A conventional dry-block incubator costs less to buy and less per test, and remains a valid way to meet monitoring obligations where a 24-hour answer is acceptable. Many Ontario clinics running daily monitoring find a combination useful: a rapid reader for load release decisions and a conventional unit as a documented alternative.
Can I use another brand’s biological indicators in a rapid reader?
Only if the reader is designed for it. Several rapid readers in this comparison are validated for a single manufacturer’s indicator line, and using an unlisted indicator invalidates the result. Open-architecture readers accept indicators made to a published format, and the clinic is responsible for confirming format compatibility and following the indicator manufacturer’s instructions for use.
How many wells do I actually need?
Count the maximum number of tests you could run in one sitting. In Ontario that is one test per sterilizer per cycle type per day the sterilizer is used, so a practice with two sterilizers using two cycle types could need up to four positions in a single day. A four-well unit covers that; a single-well unit means repeat runs and a longer bench time.
What incubation temperature should the reader hold?

The set point on its own is less important than tolerance and stability across the run, which is why annual verification of the block or chamber temperature is standard practice in documented monitoring programs.
Is a printer or records export actually required?

The practical difference is same-day release versus next-day release.
What happens if a biological indicator result is positive?
The sterilizer comes out of service, records of physical and chemical indicators since the last negative result are reviewed, and common causes such as overloading, inadequate package separation and incorrect packaging are investigated before the unit returns to use.
