We started CliniEco's PLA line because Canadian care facilities kept asking for single-use supplies that do not add to the plastic stream. Sustainability goals were entering procurement conversations, plastic-reduction attention was rising across Canada, and buyers wanted real alternatives. So we built a family of polylactic acid (PLA) products — isolation gowns, waste bags, underpads, and bed sheets — that facilities can trial against the conventional versions they already use.
Why we built a PLA line
Most disposable medical supplies are petroleum-based plastics: polypropylene for gowns and sheets, polyethylene for bags and pad backings. They work dependably and cost little, but they are single-use by design, and every unit feeds a plastic stream that usually ends in incineration or landfill. Canada's federal government has been examining plastic-waste reduction across sectors, giving facilities a fresh reason to review what they reorder every month.
Nurses, purchasing leads, clinic owners, and long-term-care administrators asked us whether comparable single-use products existed with a lighter material story. When enough buyers ask the same question, the honest answer is a real product line, not a brochure.
What PLA is, in plain terms
PLA — polylactic acid — is a bioplastic made by fermenting plant sugars, commonly from corn starch, into lactic acid, then polymerizing that into resin. The resin is spun into non-woven fabric and film on familiar equipment, so PLA gowns, sheets, bags, and pad covers look and handle much like what your staff already use. The differences sit at both ends of the life cycle: the feedstock is renewable and plant-based, and the material is designed to break down under industrial composting conditions instead of persisting for decades.
PLA is not a replacement for every single-use product. It fits where the task is low to moderate risk, the item stays clean or lightly soiled, and your region has an organics route that accepts PLA.

Honest limits: compostability needs the right conditions
PLA compostability is real but conditional. Industrial composting requires sustained heat, moisture, and microbial activity that a backyard bin rarely provides, so home composting of PLA is unreliable. Even then, the item must reach that facility through your hauler's organics stream — confirm with your hauler first. When in doubt, dispose of PLA like the conventional product it replaced.
PLA is also not right for every task. Items that contact blood or other potentially infectious material follow your facility's biohazard and medical-waste rules, never the compost stream. Select by application rather than switching everything at once.
How to trial PLA in your facility
A small, structured trial tells you more than a full conversion ever could. The approach that works for most facilities:
- Pick one area — a unit, exam room cluster, or care wing — and one product family.
- Run the trial for two to four weeks alongside your usual stock so staff can compare handling directly.
- Ask staff about fit, tear resistance, and absorbency.
- Ask your waste hauler whether PLA could be accepted in an organics stream.
- Review units used, waste volumes, and issues, then decide what to expand.

Will PLA products hold up in daily use?
Usually — staff often cannot tell the difference, because the fabric and film are produced on comparable equipment. Performance still varies by task, so run a supervised trial in your own setting.
Can we put PLA items in our facility's organics bin?
Only if your hauler and local facility accept PLA. Many municipal programs have specific rules for compostable plastics, so call your hauler before changing anything.
What if our region has no industrial composting access?
PLA still reduces reliance on petroleum feedstock, but it will not reach a composting facility. Weigh the material benefits against your local disposal reality before switching.
