You pull a wrapped tray from the autoclave, peel back the tape, and the stripe is still pale beige instead of dark brown. The load feels hot and the chamber hit temperature. So what went wrong — and was the load safe to use?
Don't use it until you know why. Autoclave tape is a process indicator, not proof of sterility, but a stripe that refused to change is a red flag worth chasing. Here's how to work through it.
Why the stripe changes color at all
Class 1 chemical indicators like CliniEco autoclave tape carry a stripe of thermochromic ink that reacts to heat, steam, and time together. When the ink sees enough of each, it darkens. The chemistry is simple; the triggering conditions are not, and any gap in steam, temperature, or time can leave the stripe unchanged.

- Expired or degraded tape. Indicator ink has a shelf life. Tape stored in heat, humidity, or sunlight ages faster than the label suggests, and aged ink no longer reacts. Check the lot and expiry first.
- Wrong tape for the cycle type. Indicator tape is rated for a temperature range. Tape suited to gravity-displacement cycles may not suit a pre-vacuum cycle at 134 °C. Match the tape to the cycle you run.
- Insufficient steam contact. An overloaded chamber, packed pouches, or a densely wrapped tray starves the tape of the moisture it needs. Steam has to reach the indicator, not just the chamber.
- Short or interrupted cycle. An aborted cycle, a low timer, or a door opened mid-cycle cuts the exposure time the ink needs. Check the cycle log, not just the gauge.
- Poor tape placement. Tape on a cold surface, a damp wrapper, or a spot shielded by fabric won't behave like tape on a proper pack. Apply it across the seal of a dry, room-temperature package.
- Storage damage. A roll kept near a heat source, crushed under supplies, or exposed to chemical fumes can lose reactivity before use. Store rolls flat, sealed, away from heat and light.

Troubleshoot it step by step

A dark stripe proves that tape's surface saw heat, steam, and time. That's all. It doesn't prove the instruments inside reached sterilization conditions, and says little about a dense pack's center.
Canadian facilities work to a layered standard: CSA Z314 and the ISO 11140-1 classification recognized by Health Canada treat Class 1 tape as a process indicator — useful for catching gross failures, never a stand-alone green light. A dark stripe is a pass for the tape, not the load. A light stripe isn't an automatic verdict either; it's a prompt to investigate.
The tape is a sentinel. The biological indicator is the judge.
Chemical indicators are the everyday monitors. Biological indicators are the court of appeal: they hold viable spores with known steam resistance, and only a truly lethal cycle kills them. That's a different question from "did the ink change color?"
