What does ASTM F2100 Level 2 cover?
ASTM F2100 sorts medical face masks into three levels of barrier performance. Level 2 is the middle one: it requires bacterial filtration efficiency and particle filtration efficiency of at least 98%, with fluid resistance between the general-examination Level 1 and the high-fluid Level 3. BFE and PFE on this pack are at or above 98%, per Nelson Labs report PRB22172-SUP01.
Is Level 2 enough for my clinic, or do I need Level 3?
Start from what the appointment actually produces. If the procedure can splash but does not arrive under pressure — sealant placement, a simple extraction, restorative work with a slow handpiece, most hygiene appointments — Level 2 is the level to stock in bulk. Move a procedure list to the Level 3 mask when fluid comes in volume or with force: surgical extractions with irrigation, and hygiene appointments where an ultrasonic scaler runs through a full mouth. Reception and general examination work sits at Level 1. Clinics that run all three stock two levels and keep the higher one for the procedures that earn it.
How much does a Level 2 mask cost per mask?
| Pack | Masks | Price | Price per mask |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 boxes × 50 | 300 | $53.94 | $0.18 |
The pack is six boxes of 50 — 300 masks at $53.94, which is $8.99 a box and $0.18 a mask. The per-mask price does not change between the box and the pack, so the reason to buy the six-box pack is fewer re-orders, not a lower unit cost.
How many Level 2 masks should a clinic keep on hand?
Count one mask per clinician per appointment block, not one per patient. A practice with one dentist and two hygienists running 20 appointment blocks a day gets through about 60 masks a day — roughly 1,260 over a 21-day month, or just over four six-box packs. Work your own number from your appointment count in the clinic supply and cost planner, and if you are choosing between levels for a specific procedure list, send the question to a compliance specialist for a written answer.
