Sterile Glove Sizing Chart: How to Match Size to Hand Length

A sterile glove one size too large rarely fails at the cuff. It fails at the fingertips, where the extra material bunches, dulls tactile feedback and snags on suture or instrument edges. Too small fails differently: the film is under tension from the moment it is donned, and stretched material tears sooner. Sizing starts with two numbers.

How do I measure hand length and palm circumference?

Measure hand length from the tip of the middle finger to the wrist crease, with the hand flat and the fingers together. Measure palm circumference around the palm at the knuckles, tape snug but not compressing the skin. Record both in millimetres. A flexible tape gives a more repeatable circumference reading than a ruler, and the dominant hand is the usual one to measure because it tends to be larger.

What glove size does my hand length match?

The convention behind surgical glove numbering is direct: the size number equals hand length in inches, rounded to the nearest half size. Measure in millimetres, divide by 25.4, then read the band.

Hand length (mm) Hand length (in) Glove size Typical exam-glove label
152 – 163 6.0 – 6.4 6 XS
165 – 175 6.5 – 6.9 6.5 S
178 – 188 7.0 – 7.4 7 M
191 – 201 7.5 – 7.9 7.5 L
203 – 213 8.0 – 8.4 8 XL

Print the chart and keep it at the glove station; the size people remember about their own hands is often wrong.

How do I work through both measurements step by step?

Example 1 — hand length 185 mm, palm circumference 200 mm. Divide 185 by 25.4 to get 7.28 inches, inside the 7.0 – 7.4 band, which points to size 7. The palm circumference is 200 divided by 25.4, or 7.87 inches, one band higher at 7.5 – 7.9. Take the larger figure: size 7.5.

Example 2 — hand length 172 mm, palm circumference 168 mm. Here 172 divided by 25.4 is 6.77 inches, inside the 6.5 – 6.9 band, so size 6.5. The palm circumference, 168 divided by 25.4, is 6.61 inches, in that same band. Nothing pushes the size upward, so the choice stays at 6.5.

Two rules generate both answers. Length sets the candidate size; circumference can move you up a half size but never down. If the two disagree by a full band or more, measure again before ordering.

Does glove size change between nitrile exam and sterile surgical gloves?

Numbers and letters are two labels describing overlapping ranges. Surgical gloves are numbered in half sizes; nitrile examination gloves are usually labelled XS through XL without numbers, and their nominal fit follows the same hand length bands. A person who wears a 7.5 surgical glove will generally read as a large in an exam range, but treat that as a starting point — exam glove fit is judged more loosely, and the chart printed on the box is the authority for that product.

The wider selection logic, including material and thickness differences, is set out in our medical glove size guide for Canadian healthcare.

What else changes the size you should order?

Film thickness and material blend shift how a nominal size feels. A heavier nitrile film resists stretch, so the same nominal size sits tighter than a thinner one, and someone between two sizes often moves up when switching to a heavier gauge. Powder-free and chlorinated finishes change how easily the glove slides on, which affects perceived fit rather than measured fit.

For a standard-weight exam glove, start with a single 100-pack in the measured size — CliniEco 4 mil standard blue nitrile exam gloves, 100-pack — and confirm the fit before scaling up.

How do I size a whole team without over-ordering?

Take every measurement once, in one session, and record each person's numbers beside the size they say they normally wear. Where the two disagree, note which figure was measured and which was reported, then check that person first when the next box arrives. Most teams settle on three or four sizes with one clearly dominant, so ordering a case of the dominant size plus smaller quantities of the rest keeps stock turning over.

Once the sizes are settled, request a bulk quote for the full case mix so quantities and sizes ship together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I size gloves by hand length or palm width?

Size by hand length first, because the numbering convention is built on it. Then check palm circumference: if it lands in a higher band, step up half a size, but never drop below the size that hand length indicates.

My hand length falls between two sizes, so which do I order?

Take the larger size for sterile surgical gloves. A glove that is slightly long can still be controlled, while one that is too short sits under tension across the palm and the fingertips, which is where tearing starts.

Are nitrile exam glove sizes the same as surgical glove sizes?

The bands overlap but the labels differ. Surgical gloves are numbered in half sizes; exam gloves are labelled XS through XL. Match on the measured hand length band, then confirm against the chart printed on the box for that product.

Why does the same size feel different in another brand?

Film thickness, material blend and surface finish all change how much a glove stretches when it is donned. Two brands can print an identical size and sit differently on the same hand, which is why a single-box check comes before a case order.
