What Is a Log Reduction?

Laboratories count contamination in colony-forming units, or CFU — each one a single viable microorganism able to grow into a visible colony on a culture plate. Efficacy testing applies a wipe to a surface seeded with a known number of CFU, then counts what survives.

Is a Log5 claim always required in a clinic?

Not for every task. Routine low-risk surfaces may be fine with a Log3 or Log4 wipe, while higher-risk areas and vulnerable patients justify more margin. The real question is whether the product claims the organisms your infection-control plan targets, such as norovirus or Clostridioides difficile.
