Setting up a plant laboratory, or rebuilding one after an audit finding, is mostly a buying problem with a documentation problem attached. The instruments get the attention; the consumables decide whether the results are worth anything. This checklist lists what a Canadian food plant QC lab needs to sample, sterilize, verify and record, with current pack sizes and prices.

5. Getting the quantities right

Two numbers drive the order. First, how often the autoclave runs and how often you spore test it: a lab that tests on each of 250 working days needs roughly 250 biological indicators and 250 control vials a year, which is five 50-vial packs, or about $600 at the case price. Weekly testing on the same machine drops that to about $125 a year. Second, how many load positions you monitor: one Class 5 integrator per monitored position per cycle adds up quickly, but at $0.15 per indicator it stays a small line item even at 250 cycles.

Everything else scales with sampling volume. 6. The record side of the checklist

Supplies do not document themselves. Alongside the order, prepare: a sample log with site identifiers and zones; a media preparation log with batch, lot and sterility checks; a sterilizer log carrying cycle number, load contents, indicator result, and the spore test with incubation and read times; a results log with the limit set for each site; and a corrective action log for every out-of-limit or positive result.

Then connect the two halves. Every item in this checklist should appear somewhere in the plan — a pouch in the packaging procedure, an integrator in the load release rule, a spore test in the monitoring frequency. If an item is on the shelf but absent from the plan, an inspector will ask why it is there; if it is in the plan but not on the shelf, the log will show the gap on the day it matters.
