A community clinic in Vancouver asked us to help trial compostable supplies: Level 1 isolation gowns, 30-gallon waste bags, and underpads for their staff lounge and reception. What "compostable" means at the material level

The standard that matters: ASTM D6400

A product can only be called compostable in North America if it passes ASTM D6400: 90 percent of the material must break down within 180 days in an industrial composter. Certification is verified by third parties such as BPI, which keeps a public list. Health Canada does not certify compostability claims; in Canada they fall under Competition Bureau guidance — a vendor's brochure is not evidence. Ask for the certificate number.

Household compost is different. Backyard piles rarely hold the 55–60°C sustained heat PLA needs, so most PLA will not fully degrade at home. If a supplier claims home compostability, check that the specific product is certified — not just the resin.

Performance versus conventional PPE

PLA is a decent barrier polymer, not a miracle one. It handles water and light fluid exposure, but heat tolerance is lower than polypropylene and thin films tear more easily than polyethylene. For Level 1 tasks — low fluid exposure, patient transport, general cleaning — the trade-off is acceptable. For splash-prone procedures it is not: no compostable gown should replace a fluid-resistant one there.

Where compostable PPE fits — and where it does not

The limiting factor is rarely the product; it is the waste stream. Regulated medical waste — biohazard, sharps, pharmaceutical — is incinerated or autoclaved in most provinces, so composting is not an option there. Compostable items deliver value only when the waste is non-hazardous and actually reaches an industrial composter. If your hauler sends everything to landfill, the certification buys you nothing.
