Biodegradable Adult Diapers: Eco-Friendly Options in Canada?

What "Biodegradable" Actually Means for Diapers

Biodegradable means a material can be broken down by microorganisms into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass — but the timeframe and conditions matter. An adult brief is a composite: fluff pulp core, superabsorbent polymer (SAP), polyethylene backsheet, elastics, and fasteners. When a package says "biodegradable," it usually means one component, not the whole product.

This matters because vague claims are where greenwashing creeps in. Some plastics marketed as "oxo-degradable" simply fragment into microplastics, which is not biodegradation at all. A 2021 draft federal science assessment reached the same conclusion. The first question for caregivers: which part of this brief is biodegradable, and by what standard?

Compostability Standards: ASTM D6400 and Beyond

The closest thing to a reliable benchmark is ASTM D6400, the standard for compostable plastics in industrial facilities. It requires at least 90 percent of the material to convert to CO₂ within 180 days, and the finished compost must pass ecotoxicity tests. Certified products carry a BPI logo or similar mark.

Here is the catch: a D6400-certified film does not make a diaper compostable. The SAP core and elastics are not covered, and most composting facilities will not accept an intact brief. Even certified film degrades slowly in home compost, which rarely reaches the 55°C industrial systems sustain.

PLA and PHA: Bioplastics in Absorbent Products

Two bioplastics dominate this category. PLA, made from fermented corn or sugarcane starch, appears in backsheets and packaging. PHA, produced by bacterial fermentation, degrades more readily in soil and marine environments but costs more. Neither has replaced conventional materials at scale.

The absorbent core is the real obstacle. SAP is a synthetic polymer that can hold dozens of times its weight in fluid, and there is no commercially compostable alternative with comparable performance. Most "eco" briefs keep a conventional core and swap only the outer layers. Absorbency stays similar; the environmental gain is partial.

The Trade-Offs: Absorbency, Cost, Availability

For an LTC facility, the comparison comes down to three factors: absorbency, cost, and availability. Here is how the two categories stack up.

Pricing tells the same story. Eco briefs typically cost 40 to 80 percent more per unit, and distributors carry few sizes and absorbency levels. Stock can be inconsistent — a real problem when a care plan depends on a specific product.

The Municipal Composting Reality in Canada

Suppose a certified compostable brief reaches your loading dock. Where does it go? Most Canadian municipalities do not accept adult incontinence products in green bin programs; facilities that do are rare. Health Canada regulates many incontinence products as medical devices, but compostability is not part of those requirements.

Canada's Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations cover bags, straws, cutlery, and ring carriers — not diapers. So there is no regulatory deadline and no funded composting stream waiting. In care settings, soiled briefs usually go to biomedical waste or landfill regardless of the outer layer.
