What an AQL of 2.5 Actually Means

The Acceptance Quality Limit is the maximum number of defective units per hundred that a sampling plan will tolerate. For medical gloves, the defect that matters most is the pinhole, a micro-perforation that lets fluids and pathogens through while staying invisible to the naked eye.

An AQL of 2.5 does not mean that 2.5% of the gloves in every box are defective. It means a lot with a true defect rate of 2.5% still has roughly a 95% chance of passing inspection. AQL describes the supplier's process quality, not a promise about any single box. That is why sampling exists: testing every glove would destroy the product.

How to Read a Lot Certificate

Every reputable manufacturer issues a lot certificate, sometimes called a Certificate of Analysis. It records the lot number, sample size, defects found, and the AQL level tested against.
