Does a veterinary clinic need sterilization monitoring?
Only if you run your own autoclave — and the rulebook is not the human one. Veterinary practices in Canada are governed by their provincial veterinary college and by the practice standards of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, not by the human dental or medical sterilization guidance that sets a monitoring frequency for RCDSO-regulated dental offices or hospital reprocessing departments.
Two consequences are worth knowing before you build a monitoring programme:
- If you reprocess on site, you still need the same physical chain any reprocessing room needs: cleaning, packaging, an indicator appropriate to the cycle, and a written record that shows what was run and when it passed. The monitoring logic is identical; the frequency requirement comes from your college and your own SOP, not from a human-medicine schedule.
- If you do not reprocess — instruments go to a referral hospital, a contracted reprocessing service, or you buy pre-sterilized disposables — then you buy no biological indicators, no pouches and no autoclave tape. You still buy the rest of the list.

Which gloves should a veterinary practice buy?

A 3.5 g or 4.0 mil examination glove is not a sterile surgical glove. Substituting one for the other is the fastest way to fail a sterile field.
How should sharps and biohazard waste be handled?
Veterinary sharps — needles, scalpel blades, suture needles — are a regulated waste stream in every Canadian province, and the requirement that matters operationally is mechanical: the container has to be puncture-resistant, closable, and replaced before it is full. Household or improvised containers are not a substitute.
Two practical rules that reduce both cost and risk:
- Segregate at the point of use. A container in every treatment and surgery location costs more upfront and less overall, because it prevents staff from carrying uncapped sharps across the room.
- Match bag to stream. Biohazard bags and general waste bags are not interchangeable; using the wrong one increases disposal cost without changing safety.

Do you sell benchtop sterilizers?
Not currently. We supply the consumable side of the chain — pouches, tape, integrators, indicators, and the reader and incubator that go with them. If you are specifying a unit, that purchase sits with your equipment supplier, and the consumables that unit will consume are what we stock.

Does a veterinary clinic need to run a biological indicator every week?
There is no national weekly rule for veterinary practice. If you reprocess on site, the monitoring frequency comes from your provincial college's practice standard and your own written protocol — and the logic of monitoring still applies: an indicator appropriate to the cycle, run with the load, with the result recorded. Human dental and hospital sterilization schedules are not the governing document for a veterinary practice.
We use pre-sterilized disposables and send instruments out. Do we still order sterilization supplies?
