Is Autoclave Indicator Tape the Same as Indicator Test Strips?

No. Autoclave indicator tape and indicator strips are both chemical indicators, but they are not the same product and they do not certify the same thing. Tape is used to close and label a pack and to show that the pack was exposed to a sterilization cycle. A strip is placed inside or on a load to show that a specific set of parameters was reached at that spot.

In practice, a clinic usually stocks both, and the confusion costs money in two directions: buying strips when tape would do, or relying on tape as if it were a monitoring result.

What does each product actually tell you?

Indicator tape is a process indicator. The ink changes colour when the pack has been through a cycle with adequate steam and temperature. It answers one question: did this pack get processed. It does not tell you whether the load reached the parameters needed for sterility.

An indicator strip is used as an internal or external chemical indicator. Depending on its class, it responds to one parameter or to a combination of time, temperature and saturated steam.

Product Where it goes ISO 11140 class What it confirms
Autoclave indicator tape The pack was exposed to a sterilisation process
External indicator strip Outside or on the label Class 1 or Class 4 Process exposure, or specified parameters at that location
Internal indicator strip Inside the pack, near the instruments Class 4, 5 or 6 Parameters were reached inside the pack, where it matters
Biological indicator In a process challenge device ISO 11138 Spore kill, the closest available proxy for sterility assurance

Can tape replace an internal indicator?

No. Tape sits on the outside of the pack, so it reports conditions at the surface. Steam has to penetrate the packaging and reach the instruments, and that is what an internal indicator or a biological indicator is for. A pack whose tape turned dark can still contain a failed load.

Why do people confuse the two?

Because both use the same ink chemistry family and both change from light to dark. The confusion is reinforced by tape being sold in rolls that look similar to strip rolls. The easiest way to keep them straight is by position: outside means process indicator, inside means parameter indicator.

What should a clinic stock?

Three things on the same shelf: indicator tape for closure and labelling, a Class 4 or higher internal indicator for packs, and biological indicators for the daily sterilizer test. If the clinic runs a validated heat sealer, tape may be used mainly for labelling rather than closure, but it is still the simplest way to make an untested pack visible at a glance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is autoclave tape the same thing as indicator test strips?

No. Tape is a Class 1 process indicator used on the outside of a pack. A test strip is usually placed inside the pack to confirm that parameters were reached where the instruments are.

Does a dark autoclave tape stripe mean the load is sterile?

No. A colour change confirms process exposure only. Sterility assurance for a load comes from the cycle parameters plus routine biological indicator monitoring.

Can you write on autoclave tape with a pen?

Yes, and the ink used for labelling is applied before the cycle so the writing survives it. Labelling the pack with the load date and sterilizer number is standard practice in a documented reprocessing workflow.
