Second, protect. The material, the closure, and any preservative inside the container decide whether the analyte is still measurable hours later. Third, identify. What it does and does not preserve

Cary-Blair is formulated to preserve organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and Vibrio species without letting background flora overgrow them. It is not a universal transport medium: viral testing, parasite examination, and molecular panels each have their own collection requirements, and sending the wrong medium can make a sample untestable even when it arrives on time.

Fill level, storage and expiry

Fill to the line marked by the manufacturer. Under-filling leaves too little sample for culture; over-filling dilutes the sample in medium and can push the swab out of the tube during transport. Store medium at the temperature range printed on the label, respect the expiry date, and rotate stock so the oldest in-date tubes are used first. Expired medium is one of the quiet causes of false-negative cultures.

24-Hour Collections: Jugs, Preservatives and Instructions

Timed urine collections fail for reasons that have little to do with the container and everything to do with instructions. The container decision still matters, because preservative choice is driven by the analyte being measured.
