How to Wash a CPAP Hose: A Weekly Routine for Tube Longevity

A CPAP hose is the part of the therapy setup that patients clean least and replace latest. It collects moisture from the humidifier, skin cells from the mask end and, in warm bedrooms, the conditions mould needs. A ten-minute weekly routine keeps the tube clear and usually extends its working life well past the six-month mark. Here is the sequence respiratory clinicians teach, and the mistakes that shorten hose life.

Before You Start

Unplug the machine and detach the hose at both ends. Separate the mask, the universal compatible 6 ft CPAP tubing and the humidifier chamber, because each has a different cleaning tolerance. Set the machine aside and keep water away from the blower unit.

The Weekly Wash

Fill a basin with warm water and a small amount of mild, fragrance-free dish soap.
Submerge the hose and let it fill. Lift both ends and let the water run through, then repeat twice.
Use a long bottle brush if the tube has visible film. Push it through gently; forcing a stiff brush tears the inner wall on slimline tubing.
Rinse by running warm water through the hose for at least thirty seconds.
Shake out excess water, then hang the hose over a towel rail with both ends pointing down so gravity drains the interior.
Air dry completely, away from direct sunlight and radiators, before reconnecting.

Skip alcohol, bleach, vinegar and essential oils. Repeated exposure to alcohol dries and cracks the polymer, and bleach residue irritates airways. Dishwasher cycles are too hot for most hoses and warp the connectors.

Two habits decide how well any hose survives. The first is never leaving it connected to a humidifier that still holds water, because capillary action keeps the tube damp between washes. The second is drying it fully before storage, since a hose coiled away still wet grows biofilm within days.

Heated Tubing Is Different

Heated hoses contain a wire coil and a sensor, so the electrical connectors must stay dry. Wash the tube length only, never immerse the connector ends, and never use the sink sprayer directly into the cuff. Most manufacturers advise hand washing for heated tubing and no dishwasher cycle at all.

Monthly and Seasonal Tasks

Once a month, soak the hose for fifteen minutes in warm soapy water and inspect the interior against a bright light. Look for cloudy film, small black specks or a musty smell. A hose that still smells after washing has reached its end.

Replace the CPAP machine filter on schedule while you are in the routine; a clogged filter raises the effort the blower needs and pushes warm, humid air back through the tube. If the humidifier chamber is scaling, use distilled water from that point on.

When to Replace the Hose

Cracks or a stiff, brittle feel when flexing.
