10 second disinfectant spray: Clinical and Procurement Guide

Note: we do not currently carry disinfecting wipes. The products we stock today for surface and skin disinfection are hand sanitizer and alcohol prep pads (200-pack, $8.99) — see Cleaning & Disinfecting for the current line-up, and check the DIN on any disinfectant label before switching products.

10 second disinfectant spray: Clinical and Procurement Guide

What does a 10 second disinfectant spray claim actually mean?

The number is a contact time, not a drying time. It describes how long a surface has to stay visibly wet for the product to meet the claim printed on its label. A ten second figure is normally claimed against a defined set of test organisms under stated conditions, which means it applies to that label rather than to every surface in the room.

Our surface-cleaning line: Cleaning & disinfecting supplies we stock, CliniEco Isolation Gowns - Level 2, 50-Pack and nitrile examination gloves, 3.5 mil, 1,000 per case, listed together in the cleaning and disinfecting collection.

How do you verify a contact time before you buy?

Four checks, and the label answers three of them.

Check Where to look What disqualifies the product
Contact time The kill claim table, not the front panel A headline time that the table does not support
Surface list The directions for use No compatibility statement for plastics or equipment housings
Pre-cleaning The directions for use A product claimed to work on soiled surfaces without a pre-clean step
Status in Canada The drug identification number on the pack No DIN, which means it is not offered as an authorised disinfectant

A short contact time only pays off if staff can keep the surface wet for that long. A ten second product that needs a thirty second dwell in practice is a slower product with faster packaging.

Which surfaces can a spray disinfectant be used on?

Only the ones the label names. Porous materials absorb the active ingredient, some plastics and equipment housings are incompatible with particular chemistries, and screens and controls usually need a different method again. Where a product asks for a pre-clean step, that step is the part that removes the soil, and the disinfectant does the part that follows; skipping it is the usual reason a fast claim disappoints.

What should a clinic check before ordering disinfectant?

Match the contact time to how your staff actually work, not to the shortest number on a shelf. Confirm the surface compatibility list covers what you clean, check whether pre-cleaning is required, confirm the drug identification number, and check the pack format so a room turnaround never depends on a single canister. Then put the products into the room-by-room routine in the compliance log centre, so the contact time is written down where the work happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 10 second disinfectant claim mean?

The number is a contact time: the length of time a surface has to stay visibly wet for the product to meet the claim on its label. A ten second figure is normally claimed against a specific set of test organisms under stated conditions, so it applies to that label, not to every surface or every organism.

How is contact time checked before buying?

Read the kill claim table on the label rather than the front panel, confirm the surface the product is intended for, and check that the product carries a drug identification number, because disinfectants sold in Canada are regulated as drugs and the label is the authorised claim.

Which surfaces can a disinfectant spray be used on?

Only the surfaces the label names. Porous materials, some plastics and some equipment housings are incompatible with particular chemistries, and a fast-contact product usually needs the surface pre-cleaned first, because soil shields organisms from the active ingredient.

What should a clinic verify before ordering disinfectant?

The contact time against the way your staff actually work, the surface compatibility list, whether pre-cleaning is required, the drug identification number, and the pack format, so a room turnaround does not depend on one canister.
