Monitoring Cost per Test: A Reference Table for Dental Sterilization Supplies
A dental clinic that runs one sterilizer buys six to eight different monitoring items, and almost none of them are priced in the same unit. Indicators are sold 25 to a box, integrators 100 to a bag, pouches 200 to a pack, tape by the roll. The table below converts published Canadian list prices into one unit each, per test or per item, so the lines can be compared without a calculator.
What does each monitoring item cost per unit?
Every figure is a published Canadian list price in Canadian dollars, read from the supplier page named in the source list and checked on 22 September 2026. Per-test and per-unit figures divide the pack price by the count in the pack.
| Biological indicator | Format and readout | Pack sold | List price | Cost per test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bionova BT20 | Self-contained, 24 hours | 100 per box | $169.90 | $1.70 |
| CliniEco Medical | Self-contained, 24 hours | 100-pack | $189.00 | $1.89 |
| CliniEco Medical | Self-contained, 24 hours | 50-pack | $119.98 | $2.40 |
| SporeView | Self-contained, 24 hours | 100 vials | $314.00 | $3.14 |
| CliniEco Medical | Fluorescence tube, 3 hours | 50-pack | $199.99 | $4.00 |
| SciCan Ensure | Self-contained, 24 hours | 25 per pack | $154.00 | $6.16 |
| Bionova BT224 | Ultra-rapid, 20 minutes | 50 per box | $400.00 | $8.00 |
| 3M Attest 1492V | Super rapid readout, 24 minutes | 50 per box | $433.49 | $8.67 |
| 3M Attest 1296 | Rapid readout test pack | 25 per box | $814.49 | $32.58 |
| Item | Brand or format | Pack sold | List price | Cost per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 5 integrator | CliniEco Medical | 200-pack | $26.99 | $0.13 |
| Class 5 integrator | CliniEco Medical | 100-pack | $14.99 | $0.15 |
| Class 5 integrator | 3M Attest steam chemical integrator 1243A | 500 per box | $171.99 | $0.34 |
| Class 5 integrator | Crosstex SteamPlus | 100 per bag | $69.99 to $88.00 | $0.70 to $0.88 |
| Class 4 chemical strip | 3M Comply 1250 | 240 per box | $37.99 | $0.16 |
| Sterilization pouch | CliniEco Medical, Class 4 dual indicator | 200-pack | $9.99 | $0.05 |
| Sterilization pouch | Crosstex Sure-Check, 3.5 x 9 in | 200 per box | $30.95 | $0.15 |
| Indicator tape | CliniEco Medical, 1 in x 60 yd | 3-roll set | $14.99 | $5.00 per roll |
| Indicator tape | 3M Comply, 24 mm x 55 m | 20-roll case | $177.99 | $8.90 per roll |
| Indicator tape | 3M Comply, 24 mm x 55 m | single roll | $9.99 | $9.99 per roll |
| Bowie-Dick test pack | CliniEco Medical, ISO 11140-5 Type 2 | 6-pack | $24.99 | $4.17 per test |
| Bowie-Dick test pack | 3M Comply 1233LF | 6 per pack | $73.50 | $12.25 per test |
Two rows need a caveat before they are used as like for like. The 3M Attest 1296 is a test pack rather than a plain indicator: it contains an indicator and a process challenge device, which is why its price per test sits so far above the rest of the column. And the 24-minute 1492V indicator is read inside a 3M reader, so its cost per test is only comparable with another rapid format, not with a 24-hour vial.
What does the hardware add in year one?

| Hardware | Wells or format | List price | What it reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| CliniEco Medical dry-block incubator | 24 wells | $279.00 | 24-hour self-contained indicators |
| CliniEco Medical fluorescence reader | 4 wells | $1,499.00 | 3-hour fluorescence indicator tubes |
| Crosstex ConFirm Rapid Read 20 kit | Reader plus indicators | $2,358.95 | ConFirm rapid readout indicators |
| 3M Attest auto-reader, model 490 | 4 wells | $4,799.99 | Attest rapid indicators, including the 1492V |
The hardware line is where a per-test comparison can mislead. A clinic already holding a 3M reader is comparing consumables; a clinic starting from nothing is comparing a consumable plus a reader, and the reader does not get less expensive with volume. The 3M Attest 490M reader is not in this table because no public Canadian price was found for it — the pages that carry it show a price only after sign-in.
How often is each item used?
The unit prices only become a budget when they are multiplied by use. The model below assumes one sterilizer, five clinical days across 50 weeks, four loads a day, six instrument sets a day, and one strip of tape per pouch. Those assumptions are stated so a clinic can replace them with its own numbers.
| Line | Times a year | CliniEco Medical, per year | Lowest published alternative | Highest published alternative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biological indicators | 250 | $472.50 | $425.00 (Bionova BT20) | $2,167.50 (3M Attest 1492V) |
| Class 5 integrators | 1,000 | $149.90 | $340.00 (3M 1243A) | $880.00 (Crosstex SteamPlus) |
| Sterilization pouches | 1,500 | $74.92 | $232.12 (Crosstex Sure-Check) | $232.12 (Crosstex Sure-Check) |
| Indicator tape | 1,500 strips | $34.07 | $60.68 (3M Comply) | $60.68 (3M Comply) |
Only one public alternative price was found for pouches and for tape, so those two rows repeat the same figure in both columns rather than showing a range.

The biological indicator column shows the widest spread in the whole matrix: $1.70 to $8.67 a test is a difference of $6.97, which repeats 250 times a year and lands at $1,742.50 between the lowest and highest published line. That is the number worth carrying into a purchase decision, and it is also the number that never appears on a supplier's page, because suppliers price in packs rather than in tests.
Where do the published prices stop?
Four gaps showed up while this matrix was being built, and each one is a step in the buying process rather than a price:
- The 3M Attest 490M reader: Canadian pages show the product and require an account before showing a price.
- Crosstex indicator tape and the Crosstex AirView II Bowie-Dick pack: no Canadian list price was found on the retail pages checked.
- Distributor house-brand monitoring lines: catalogue pages show the item and the pack size, with pricing behind sign-in.
- Class 6 indicators: frequently quotation-based rather than listed, because they are made to order for specific cycles.
What should a clinic do with this table?
Four steps turn the matrix into an order.
- Convert every line to one unit before comparing: per test for indicators, per item for integrators, pouches and tape.
- Keep readout speed in a separate column. The dearest line per test in this matrix is the fastest one, and it is only a fair comparison against another rapid format.
- Multiply by use, not by unit price. 250 spore tests and 1,000 loads produce different annual totals from the same table.
- Check the hardware the format requires before switching, because a reader is a one-off cost that no per-test saving recovers in the first year at clinic volumes.
If you want to check the indicator line against your current product before buying a case, the BI 5-pack trial is $12.99 for five tests. The 100-pack used in the tables above is here, the Class 5 integrators are here, and the rest of the lines are in the sterilization monitoring collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lowest cost per test for a biological indicator in Canada?
On published Canadian list prices checked in September 2026, the lowest per-test figure in this matrix is $1.70 for a 24-hour self-contained indicator at 100 to a box, followed by $1.89 for a 100-pack and $2.40 for a 50-pack. The dearest per-test figure is $8.67 for a 24-minute readout indicator at 50 to a box.
Why do rapid readout biological indicators cost more per test?
Readout speed is the reason. A 24-hour self-contained indicator is incubated and read the next day, while a rapid readout indicator is read within hours and usually needs a reader that the incubation happens inside. In this matrix, the 24-hour formats sit between $1.70 and $6.16 a test and the rapid formats between $4.00 and $8.67 a test.
What does a Class 5 integrator cost compared with a biological indicator?
Far less per unit and more times over. Published prices for Class 5 integrators in this matrix run from $0.13 to $0.88 each, against $1.70 to $8.67 for a biological indicator. Because an integrator is used with loads while a spore test runs once a day, the smaller unit price is applied more often.
Which lower-priced line adds up to more in a year?
The one used most often. At 250 spore tests a year, moving from a $3.14 indicator to a $1.89 indicator saves $312.50. At 1,000 loads a year, moving from a $0.70 integrator to a $0.15 integrator saves $550.00 — more than the spore test, even though the unit difference looks smaller.
What does the hardware add beyond the consumables?
The incubator or reader is a separate line. In this matrix the hardware prices checked in September 2026 run from $279 for a 24-well dry-block incubator to $4,799.99 for a 3M Attest model 490 auto-reader. A 24-hour indicator only needs an incubator; a rapid readout indicator needs the reader its instructions specify.
Why do some prices in this matrix say not published?
Several Canadian distributors and manufacturers publish monitoring prices only to signed-in accounts, so no public list price exists to quote. In this matrix the 3M Attest 490M reader, the Crosstex indicator tape and the Crosstex AirView II Bowie-Dick pack are in that group, which is why the comparison uses published lines only.
Should a clinic switch indicator formats to get a lower cost per test?
A format change is worth costing before it is bought, because a different readout time can require different hardware and a different daily routine. The arithmetic that matters is the annual line, not the unit price: 250 indicators a year at $1.89 is $472.50, and the same 250 at $8.67 is $2,167.50.
