EN 868: What Sterilization Packaging Standards Require of Pouches and Reels
A dental office packaging 40 instrument sets a week makes a decision every time it opens a box of pouches, and that decision is made on the packaging standard printed on the wrapper. EN 868 is the series that defines what those pouches, reels and wraps have to do.
Why packaging is part of the device, not an afterthought
Sterile barrier packaging has one job: keep the contents sterile from the sterilizer to the moment of use, and allow aseptic presentation when the pouch is opened. If the seal fails, the fibre-free peel fails, or the film tears in transit, the instrument is no longer sterile, whatever the autoclave log says.

What the EN 868 parts cover
| Part | Covers | What a clinic checks |
|---|---|---|
| :-- | :-- | :-- |
| EN 868-2 | Sterilization wrap | Grade and weight for the load type |
| EN 868-3 | Paper for pouch and reel construction | Whether the paper suits steam cycles |
| EN 868-5 | Heat and self-seal pouches of paper and film | Seal type, indicator class, sizes |
| EN 868-6 | Paper for paper-film pouches and reels | Compatibility with the sealer |
| EN 868-8 | Reels of paper and film | Cutting, sealing and storage of reels |
| EN 868-10 | Adhesive coated paper | Tape adhesion and removal behaviour |

Most dental offices live in part 5 for pouches and part 8 for reels, with part 2 for wrap used around cassettes or tray systems.
Matching packaging to the monitoring you already do
Packaging and monitoring are a pair. A pouch with a Class 4 indicator gives an external check of the cycle, while a Class 5 or 6 indicator gives a tighter internal reading for the load. If the office runs biological indicators daily, the pouch only has to be compatible and sealable, and the spore test carries the sterility assurance argument.
What to confirm before reordering
- Cycle compatibility: steam, low temperature or dry heat as used in the office
- Seal method: self-seal adhesive or a heat sealer set for the film thickness
- Size range: at least two sizes so cassettes are not crammed
- Indicator class printed on the pouch, not implied
- Storage: pouches standing on edge in a closed drawer away from moisture
For daily dental work the practical set is a Class 4 dual-indicator pouch (Class 4 pouches, assorted sizes) for individual instruments, a reel or roll (sterilization roll, 50 m) for longer items, and a sealer (constant-heat pouch sealer) where the office prefers a heat seal to a self-seal strip. Offices building out a monitoring routine can start with the biological indicator 5-pack trial at CA $12.99 with shipping included and add a weekly or daily schedule once the log is in place.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EN 868 in one sentence?
It is the European series of standards that sets requirements and test methods for the packaging materials and systems used to keep medical devices sterile until they are used, covering wrap, paper, pouches, reels and related formats.
How is EN 868 different from ISO 11607?
ISO 11607 describes what a sterile barrier system has to achieve and how the sealing process is validated. EN 868 goes down a level and describes the individual materials and formats, such as paper and paper-film pouches, so the two are used together.
Do Canadian dental offices need EN 868 packaging?
What a Canadian office needs is packaging whose manufacturer can show it was tested to a recognised standard and is compatible with the sterilizer cycle used. Many pouches sold in Canada are tested to EN 868 parts, and the packaging standard is written on the pouch itself.
What should I check on a pouch before ordering a case?
Check that the pouch is compatible with your cycle type, that the indicator class matches the monitoring your office performs, that the size range fits your instrument cassettes, and that the seal can be closed by the method you use, whether self-seal or heat seal.
