Already Own a 3M Attest 490 or 490M? The Cost of Switching Off 1492V Indicators
A dental practice that bought a 3M Attest 490 reader years ago has already paid for it. The reader is on the bench, the wells still hold vials, and the question that reaches us is no longer which reader to buy. It is what happens to the consumable line. In Canada a box of 50 Attest 1492V indicators lists at $433.49, or $8.67 a test, on the supplier page checked 22 September 2026, and Ontario asks for a biological indicator on every day the sterilizer is used.
Quick summary: the reader is a sunk cost, and keeping it does not recover what was spent on it. The 490 instructions for use names three indicator lines and states that other biological indicators are not compatible with the device and cannot be used. The 24-minute result buyers count on depends on embedded software 4.0.0 or greater, not on the model. On the consumable line, 250 tests a year costs $2,167.50 on 1492V at $8.67 a test, $472.50 on a 24-hour self-contained indicator at $1.89, or $1,000.00 on a 3-hour rapid readout indicator at $4.00.What does the reader you already own actually read?
Start with the instructions for use rather than the sales sheet. In the 3M Attest documents we could retrieve, each indicator line is declared for a specific reader, and the readout time has a software condition attached to it.
| Indicator line | Reader named in the instructions for use | Readout time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M Attest 1295, vapour process | Attest Auto-reader 490 with software 4.0.0 or greater; Attest Auto-reader 490H | 24 minutes | 490 IFU, PDF page 3; 490H manual, PDF page 4 |
| 3M Attest 1491, steam super rapid | Attest Auto-reader 490 with software 4.0.0 or greater | 24 minutes, with an optional 24-hour visual colour change result | 490 IFU, PDF pages 3 and 7 |
| 3M Attest 1492V, steam super rapid | Attest Auto-reader 490; 490H with software 4.0.0 or greater; Mini Auto-reader 490M | 24 minutes on a 490 or 490H at 4.0.0 or greater and on the 490M; 1 hour on a 490 below 4.0.0 | 1492V IFU, PDF page 2 |
| 3M Attest 1291, 1292 and 1292E, steam rapid | Attest Auto-reader 390 only | 1 hour for the 1291; 3 hours for the 1292 and 1292E | 390 IFU, PDF pages 4 and 5 |
| 3M Attest 1261 and 1262, steam | Not designed for the 390 | not applicable | 390 IFU, PDF page 5 |
| Any other make of biological indicator | Not compatible with the 490 and cannot be used | not applicable | 490 IFU, PDF page 3 |
Two rows carry most of the weight. The last one settles the supplier question: a different vial does not turn the reader into an open platform, because the device is declared only for the indicator lines named with it. The fourth row settles a workflow question buyers often miss, because the 490 does not read every indicator in the same family either: the three-hour steam rapid readout 1291, 1292 and 1292E belong to the 390, and they are not named anywhere in the 490 document.
Our earlier 3M Attest 490 series deep dive covers the hardware comparison between the 490M, the 490 and the 390. This page stays on the arithmetic an owner faces.
What does the 1492V instructions for use require from the reader?

The 24-minute result is a software question. The 1492V instructions for use states that the final negative reading is made at 24 minutes in 490 or 490H auto-readers having software version 4.0.0 or greater and in 490M auto-readers, and at 1 hour in 490 auto-readers having software version less than 4.0.0. A practice that has counted on a 24-minute turnaround may be running a unit whose firmware returns a 1-hour final reading, which changes how a same-day implant load is scheduled.
The check needs no tools. Pressing the Information button on the 490 displays the serial number, the embedded software version shown as V X.Y.Z, and the current date and time. Record that version in the equipment log beside the sterilizer. The 1492V document also names three readers - the 490, the 490H at software 4.0.0 or greater, and the 490M. The 390 is not among them.
The 1492V is declared for dynamic-air-removal steam cycles: pre-vacuum and steam-flush pressure-pulse cycles of 3 minutes at 132C, 4 minutes at 132C and 3 minutes at 135C. The same document says not to use it for gravity-displacement steam cycles, 121C dynamic-air-removal cycles, dry heat, chemical vapour, ethylene oxide or other low-temperature processes. A practice running a gravity cycle alongside a pre-vacuum cycle therefore needs a second monitoring route whatever the consumable costs.
How do you cost a switch when the reader is already paid for?
The reader price is not part of this calculation, because it has already been spent. What remains is the consumable, the volume, and whatever hardware the new route needs.
| Step | What to work out | Figures used in this model |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cost per test of the consumable you hold now | 3M Attest 1492V: $433.49 divided by 50 = $8.67 a test |
| 2 | Cost per test of the alternative | 24-hour self-contained indicator: $189.00 divided by 100 = $1.89 a test; 3-hour rapid readout indicator: $199.99 divided by 50 = $4.00 a test |
| 3 | Tests in a year | 250, being one test for each day the sterilizer is used |
| 4 | Annual consumable spend | $2,167.50 on 1492V; $472.50 on the 24-hour vial; $1,000.00 on the 3-hour vial |
| 5 | Hardware the new route needs | $279.00 for a 24-well dry-block incubator with a visual 24-hour read; $1,499.00 for a 4-well fluorescence reader for a 3-hour read |
| 6 | Break-even point | $279.00 divided by $6.78 a test = 42 tests; $1,499.00 divided by $4.67 a test = 321 tests |
| Route for a practice that already owns a 490 | Hardware to buy | Cost per test | Year one, 250 tests | Year two onward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep buying 1492V indicators | $0 | $8.67 | $2,167.50 | $2,167.50 |
| 24-hour self-contained indicator, visual read | $279.00 incubator | $1.89 | $751.50 | $472.50 |
| 3-hour rapid readout indicator, instrument read | $1,499.00 reader | $4.00 | $2,499.00 | $1,000.00 |

The first route costs nothing today and the most every year after. The second repays its $279.00 of hardware after 42 tests, about two months at 250 tests a year, then runs at $472.50 a year: $751.50 in year one against $2,167.50, and $1,695.00 saved from year two onward. The third needs a reason other than money, because $1,499.00 of equipment takes 321 tests to repay and justifies itself on closing a load the same day. The earlier page on 1492V against a 3-hour indicator weighs the buy-from-scratch decision for a practice with no reader. This page is only about the owner's arithmetic.
What does the sunk cost actually keep for you?
Keeping the reader is not a mistake, but it is worth being clear about what it buys.
- It keeps reading the Attest lines it was built for, including the 1295 for a vapour process where the software level is 4.0.0 or greater.
- It cannot read another supplier's indicator, so the hardware cannot be folded into a mixed-source purchasing policy.
- It cannot absorb a 1292 three-hour workflow, which sits with the 390.
- It has no published Canadian resale value that we could verify, so we do not put a recovery figure on it. Treat what is left as convenience rather than cash.
Two holding patterns come up in practice. A clinic can keep the reader for implant loads and vapour cycles while moving routine daily monitoring to a 24-hour self-contained vial read in an incubator, or run the reader through the last box of 1492V and keep the unit as the specialised slot it now is. Both move the daily test, the line that repeats 250 times a year, onto the lower-cost consumable.
What should a practice holding a 490 check before it switches?
- Press the Information button on the 490 and write the embedded software version into the equipment log.
- Count the unopened 1492V boxes and check the expiry dates, because those are tests already paid for.
- List the cycles each sterilizer runs and mark whether each is a dynamic-air-removal cycle or a gravity cycle.
- Decide whether a same-day result is a compliance requirement or a scheduling preference. Ontario asks for a spore test on each day of use and a record of the result, not a same-day result.
- Run a trial before committing a year of consumables. A 5-pack trial of our 24-hour self-contained indicator puts five real tests through your own sterilizer for less than the price of one 1492V box, and the 100-pack of the same 24-hour vial is the pack that brings the per-test cost to $1.89.
The two pieces of hardware named in the model are a 24-well dry-block incubator for the visual 24-hour read and a 4-well fluorescence reader for the instrument read, which pairs with the 3-hour rapid readout indicator. Clinics auditing the wider monitoring record can start from CliniEco learning hub and the sterilization monitoring collection, and the per-test figures sit against full clinic budgets in our cost model by clinic size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use another brand's biological indicator in a 3M Attest 490?
No. The 490 instructions for use states that other biological indicators are not compatible with the device and cannot be used, and the indications for use name only three indicator lines: the 1295, 1491 and 1492V.
Does a 3M Attest 490 give a 24-minute result with 1492V indicators?
It depends on the embedded software, not on the model alone. The 1492V instructions for use states that the final negative reading is made at 24 minutes in a 490 or 490H with software version 4.0.0 or greater and in a 490M, and at 1 hour in a 490 with software below 4.0.0. Press the Information button on the 490 to display that version.
Will a 3M Attest 490 read the 1292 three-hour indicator?
Not according to the instructions for use. The 490 names the 1295, 1491 and 1492V indicators. The 1291, 1292 and 1292E rapid readout indicators are read in the Attest Auto-reader 390, at 1 hour for the 1291 and 3 hours for the 1292 and 1292E.
What does 3M Attest 1492V cost per test in Canada?
$433.49 for a box of 50, or $8.67 a test, at the Canadian supplier page checked on 22 September 2026. Some Canadian pages show the product only after an account sign-in, so re-check before committing a year of consumables.
How much does a clinic save a year by switching away from 1492V?
At 250 tests a year the consumable line falls from $2,167.50 to $472.50 with a 24-hour self-contained indicator at $1.89 a test, or to $1,000.00 with a 3-hour rapid readout indicator at $4.00 a test.
Do I need a reader to use a 24-hour self-contained biological indicator?
No. The vial is activated, incubated and then read visually for a colour change. A 24-well dry-block incubator lists at $279.00 in our catalogue, and the same vial can also be read in a fluorescence reader at 24 hours.
How often does an Ontario dental practice have to run a spore test?
The RCDSO states that spore testing must be done each day the sterilizer is used and the results recorded in a logbook, with a control test alongside it. The joint PHO-RCDSO reprocessing checklist adds that the sterilizer is tested with a BI in a process challenge device each day it is used, and with each type of cycle used that day.
Which sterilizer cycles is the 3M Attest 1492V designed for?
Dynamic-air-removal steam cycles: 3 minutes at 132C, 4 minutes at 132C and 3 minutes at 135C. The instructions for use say not to use it for gravity-displacement steam cycles, 121C dynamic-air-removal cycles, dry heat, chemical vapour, ethylene oxide or other low-temperature processes.
