Incubator Well Count: 6, 10 or 15 Wells — What a Canadian Clinic Should Buy

Why Does Well Count Matter More Than It Looks?

Well count is a capacity decision disguised as a specification. Every well holds one vial for the full read period, and vials cannot come out early to make room. The DLAB HB105-S1 dry bath incubator is stocked in Canada for clinics that test daily; smaller 6, 10 and 15 well blocks are the sizes most often quoted in tenders but less often in stock.

How Do You Work Out How Many Wells You Need?

Count vials per run, not instruments per week. One vial per sterilizer per testing day, plus one control vial per run, is the working rule. Multiply by any second read period if the site runs both in-house and mail-in monitoring.

Clinic profile Vials per run Wells needed Unit that fits
One sterilizer, daily testing 2 2–6 6 or 10 well block
Two sterilizers, daily testing 3 3–10 10 or 15 well block
Three sterilizers plus a repeat well 5 5–15 15 or 24 well block
Four to six sterilizers, group site 7–10 10–24 24 well block
Lab with multiple autoclaves 12 or more 24–40 two 20 well units

What Do the Small Sizes Actually Cover?

A 6 well block covers two sterilizers with a control and one spare well, which is why it appears in single-chair quotes. A 10 well block covers three sterilizers with a control and room for a repeat. A 15 well block is the point where a clinic stops counting wells and starts counting days: at three vials a run, it holds five runs.

When Does a 20 or 24 Well Block Make Sense?

When the site runs two read periods, or when several operatories share one monitoring bench. The step up is not only capacity: a 20 well dry bath incubator with a lid holds a full daily run plus the control in one load, which reduces how often the block is opened during a run. Groups that standardise across sites usually pick one block size and stay with it.

Does Voltage Change the Choice?

It can, in practice. Canadian benches run 110–120 V, and a model sold mainly into 220 V markets may need a transformer. The DLAB HB120-S dry bath incubator is the 110–120 V version, which matters more to a buyer than two extra wells.

What Should You Check Before You Choose a Size?

Four things: the vial diameter your indicators use, whether a lid is included, how the block is swapped if the format changes, and whether the control vial is stored and incubated with the test vials. A unit that seats the vials but has no spare block locks the clinic into one indicator format.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many wells do I need for two sterilizers?

Three per testing day: one vial for each sterilizer plus one control vial from the same lot, so a 6 well unit covers two sterilizers with room for a repeat.

Is one control vial enough for several sterilizers?

One control per incubation run, not per sterilizer, is the common practice; the control proves the incubator and the vial lot performed, and it is read alongside the test vials.

Can I incubate mail-in strips in the same unit?

Only if the block takes the strip carrier; spore strips are incubated in the same 57 to 60 degree range but sit in a different holder, which is why larger blocks are ordered by sites that do both.

What happens if the block has more wells than I use?

Nothing operationally, but empty wells cost money and take bench space; a 24 well unit already gives a single sterilizer clinic roughly four weeks of daily testing plus controls before the block is full.
