Chemical Indicator Tape: How to Read a Colour Change Correctly

Chemical indicator tape does not tell you a load is sterile. It tells you the pack was exposed to the sterilisation process, and that is a narrower statement than most clinics assume. Reading the colour change correctly, and knowing what it cannot prove, is the difference between a useful process check and a false sense of assurance.

What does the colour change on autoclave tape actually mean?

The stripe on the tape changes colour when it is exposed to the temperature and conditions the tape was designed to detect. It confirms that the pack went through a cycle. It does not confirm that the cycle reached the correct parameters throughout the load, and it does not confirm that organisms were killed. Two packs in the same load can both show a full colour change while the load itself was compromised.

Indicator type What it shows What it cannot show
External tape stripe Pack was exposed to the process Conditions inside the pack
Internal chemical indicator Conditions reached inside the pack Whether organisms were killed
Biological indicator Whether the process killed a known organism Conditions in a specific pack

How should the colour change be read?

Compare the stripe against the manufacturer's reference chart, not against a memory of the colour. The change should be uniform along the strip and reach the reference colour, not a partial or streaky transition. A stripe that is uneven, or that stops short of the reference, is a signal to check the cycle and the load placement rather than to release the pack.

Why do some stripes look darker than others?

Variation usually comes from load position, steam penetration and the tape's own storage. A pack at the front of the chamber may read more strongly than one shielded by a dense tray. If the pattern is consistent and the chemical indicators match the cycle parameters, that is normal. If the pattern is new and the stripes are consistently pale, that points to a cycle fault worth investigating before the day's loads are released.

Rolls of autoclave indicator tape in a dispenser box

How should tape be stored so it reads correctly?

Store tape away from heat, direct sunlight and humidity, and close the box between uses. A roll left in a warm cupboard or near a sterilizer can drift out of specification before it is used, and a drifting tape produces readings nobody can interpret. Keep the roll where you use it, but not on top of the machine.

What belongs on the pack besides the tape?

Write the load date and a cycle reference on the tape before the cycle, using a pen that does not smudge. That single line is what links the pack to the day's record, and it is what lets a clinic trace an instrument back to its cycle if a biological result later fails. Tape used only to seal the pack, with nothing written on it, gives the record nothing to work with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a colour change on autoclave tape prove sterilization?

No. It shows the pack was exposed to the process. It does not prove the correct parameters were reached inside the load, and it does not show that organisms were killed.

How do I read an autoclave indicator tape correctly?

Compare the stripe with the manufacturer's reference chart. The change should be uniform and reach the reference colour; a streaky or pale stripe is a reason to check the cycle.

How should autoclave tape be stored?

Away from heat, direct sunlight and humidity, with the box closed between uses. A roll stored near the sterilizer can drift out of specification before it is used.
