What this is

Class 4 (ISO 11140-1 Type 4) self-sealing sterilization pouches with a dual external/internal indicator — one pouch carries the instrument set, shows steam exposure on the outside and confirms penetration inside. Medical-grade paper on one face, CPP/PET film on the other, with a self-seal adhesive strip and a peel-open tab.

Sizes and packaging

Eight size options, each sold as a 200-pouch box or a case of ten boxes (2,000 pouches). The case price is 20% below ten single boxes. Pick the size that fits your largest instrument set — a pouch that is too small will not seal flat.

Which pouch size fits which instrument set?

Sizing starts from the largest single item in the set rather than the set as a whole, because a pouch seals flat only when the item sits inside it with clear paper on both sides of the seal line — a few burs and a single extraction forceps are both one set, and they take different sizes. The range runs from 2.5" x 4" (64 x 130 mm overall) for small hand instruments, through 3.5" x 9" (90 x 260 mm overall) for a standard hygiene or examination set, to 10" x 15" (230 x 395 mm overall) for a full procedure tray. Anything that will not sit flat inside the largest pouch is wrapped and taped instead, which is the job of the autoclave indicator tape, three rolls to a set. Where several sizes run on one bench, the assorted box keeps them all at hand without a case of any single size.

How do you read the two indicators once a pouch comes out of the cycle?

The two readings answer different questions. The indicator on the outside face responds to the process, so it tells you this pouch went through a cycle rather than sitting in a drawer; the internal indicator, seen once the pouch is peeled at the tab, tells you the agent reached the instruments inside. Read in that order, one pouch supplies both an exposure record and a penetration check, which is why a load record can be built from the pouches themselves.

Is a 200-pouch box or the 2,000-pouch case the right order?

Match the format to how settled the size is, then to volume. A 200-pouch box is the first order for a size not yet standardised, and the standing order for a bench sterilising a few sets a day; the case of ten boxes (2,000 pouches) is the same pouch in ten-box form, so it suits the one or two sizes the clinic already runs through every week. Count the pouches a working week actually consumes, multiply by four for a month, and put that figure against 200 and against 2,000.

What closes the pouch when there is no sealing machine on the bench?

The self-sealing adhesive strip, folded over and pressed along the paper face, with the peel-open tab left free at the end. No machine and no pre-heat are involved, so the pouch closes at the chair the moment the set comes off the washer, and a second bench without a sealer can work from the same box. A heat sealer belongs to the other formats in this workflow — rolls and tubing cut to length — and where a bench does both, the constant-heat pouch sealer with a 12 mm seal covers the roll side.

Are these pouches cleared for ethylene oxide as well as steam?

Steam is the process this range is built for: 121 to 135 °C, including the 132 to 135 °C vacuum-assisted cycles run in most bench autoclaves. The listing states the pouches are not intended for ethylene oxide or dry-heat cycles, so a clinic running an EO cabinet or a dry-heat oven is looking at a different pouch specification. Because a load record is only as good as what monitors it, the pouch reading is normally taken alongside a spore test — the 24-hour biological indicator, 25 tests to a box — so chemical and biological evidence sit on the same sheet.

For a new suite or a full bench restock, the sterilization and infection control range puts tape, sealer and rolls next to these pouches, and a clinic standardising monitoring across several sites orders through the sterilization monitoring collection. Pouches are stocked and distributed in Canada by CliniEco Medical under MDEL #35334, and documentation for clinic files travels with the shipment.

Why Class 4 rather than plain Class 1

A Class 1 indicator only tells you the pack saw steam. A Class 4 indicator responds to two or more variables and is designed for the specific sterilization process, so it is the one an inspector reads when they ask how you know the load was exposed correctly.

Choosing the right sterilization pouch for your clinic

This product is covered in our full buyer's guide: Sterilization Pouches: Sizes, Pack Counts and the Seal Evidence.

All eight sizes carry the same Class 4 (ISO 11140-1 Type 4) dual indicator and are processed by steam at 121–135 °C; the pouch pairs 60/70 GSM medical-grade paper with a CPP/PET film face, a self-seal adhesive strip and a peel-open tab. Size the pouch to your largest instrument set with a flat seal margin — the guide sets out the 2.5" × 4" to 10" × 15" range, what a 200-pouch box covers against a 2,000-pouch case, and what to keep on file as seal evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pouch sizes are available in this listing?
Seven sizes plus an assorted box: 2.5 x 4 in (64 x 130 mm), 2.75 x 9 in (70 x 260 mm), 3.5 x 5.25 in (90 x 165 mm), 3.5 x 9 in (90 x 260 mm), 5.25 x 10 in (135 x 280 mm), 7 x 13 in (190 x 360 mm) and 10 x 15 in (230 x 395 mm). Each size is sold as a 200-pouch box or a case of 10 boxes (2,000 pouches).
How many pouches come in a box and in a case?
200 pouches per box and 2,000 per case of 10 boxes. The 2.5 x 4 in case is 35.92 Canadian dollars, which is 1.8 cents per pouch, against 2.25 cents per pouch from a single box at 4.49 Canadian dollars.
What does a Class 4 indicator show that a Class 1 does not?
A Class 1 indicator only confirms the pack saw the process; a Class 4 indicator to ISO 11140-1 responds to two or more variables and is matched to the cycle. These pouches carry a dual indicator that reads on the outside face and again on the internal face after peel-open.
Do I need a pouch sealer to use these?
No. Every pouch closes on a self-sealing adhesive strip with a peel-open tab, so no machine and no pre-heat is involved. A constant-heat sealer is only needed for rolls or packs beyond the 300 mm (12 in) sealed length a bench unit produces.
Which sterilization cycles are these pouches made for?
Steam (autoclave) cycles between 121 C and 135 C, including 132-135 C vacuum-assisted cycles. They are not intended for ethylene oxide or dry-heat cycles.
How should the pouches be stored before use?
Dry, out of direct sunlight, at room temperature, and worked from the expiry date printed on each box. The paper face is 60/70 GSM medical paper laminated to CPP/PET film, and a damp or creased paper face will not seal flat.
