Unused sterile pouches should be stored flat in their original carton, in a cool dry area away from direct sunlight, the sterilizer and any water source, and rotated first in, first out. Most seal failures we are asked to trace are not sealer faults at all; they start with a carton left open on a shelf above a sink. The pouches themselves are the Class 4 dual-indicator sterilization pouches most Canadian clinics run, and the storage rules below apply to every format.

What conditions damage a pouch before it is ever used?
Four things: moisture, heat, compression and contamination. Moisture warps the paper layer and softens the adhesive line. Heat near a sterilizer or a radiator ages the adhesive before the pouch reaches the chamber. Compression from a heavy box stacked on top creases the paper and creates a channel that will not seal. Contamination from an open carton stored under a counter collects dust and lint on the inner surface, which is a foreign material risk inside a sterile field.
Where should pouches be stored in a small clinic?
| Location | Suitable | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Closed cabinet in the clean utility room | Yes | Dry, out of light, above floor level |
| Open shelf above a sink | No | Splash and humidity reach the paper layer |
| On top of the sterilizer | No | Radiant heat ages the adhesive |
| Floor or under-sink cupboard | No | Flood risk and cleaning chemical vapour |
| Sealed bin in a treatment room | Conditional | Only if the bin closes and is not in the splash zone |
Does the carton have to stay closed?
Yes. The carton is the packaging the manufacturer validated, and an open carton exposes the inner surface of every remaining pouch to room air, dust and aerosol. If staff find it faster to leave the box open, move the box rather than the lid: a shallow tray that holds a day of pouches and closes is a better compromise than an open carton on a bench.
How does storage connect to seal failures months later?
Adhesive that has absorbed moisture or aged in heat will seal on the machine and then lift under the pressure change of the cycle. The failure appears as a peel-back edge or a channel, and staff usually blame the sealer temperature. Before recalibrating anything, check where the pouch lived for the previous month. If the carton sat above a sink or on the sterilizer, move it and re-test a full cycle of pouches before touching the sealer settings.
What is the rotation rule?
Write the receive date on the carton, put the newest carton behind the oldest, and use the oldest first even when the sizes differ in popularity. Size-specific stock tends to pile up in the least used dimension, so check the small and long sizes at each stock count rather than only the workhorse size.
How should pouches be handled at the point of use?
Keep fingernails and jewellery away from the paper, do not write on the paper panel with a sharp pen, and label on the film side or the designated write strip. Do not fold a pouch to fit an instrument; select the correct size, because a folded pouch has a crease that can lift and a paper layer that has been mechanically stressed before sterilization.
Printable layer: the sterilization log center holds the printable daily spore test log, and the same page runs a log generator for clinics that record on screen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can unused pouches be stored in the sterilizer room?
Only in a closed cabinet away from the unit itself. Radiant heat from a sterilizer ages the adhesive and the paper layer, and the room humidity is usually higher than a clean storage area.
Does an open carton affect sterility of unused pouches?
It affects the inner surface. The pouch is not sterile before processing, but dust, lint and aerosol on the inner surface become foreign material inside a sterile field, and moisture uptake weakens the seal.
Why do pouches fail at the seal after months in storage?
Adhesive that has taken up moisture or been stored warm will seal and then lift under cycle pressure. Check storage conditions before recalibrating the sealer.
Should pouches be stacked flat or on edge?
Flat, in the original carton, with nothing heavy on top. Creasing from compression creates a channel that will not seal reliably.
Does writing on a pouch damage it?
Writing on the paper panel with a sharp pen can score the fibres. Label on the film side or the designated write strip, and never fold a pouch to make it fit.
