Gym and Fitness Studio Hygiene in Canada: Equipment and Towel Rules

A gym at six in the evening is a room of shared surfaces. Every handle, bench, mat and machine console is touched by dozens of hands in an hour, and the equipment that carries the most contact is often the equipment that gets wiped the least. Hygiene in a studio is not one deep clean; it is a round that runs on a schedule, with a record that shows it ran.

What should a gym clean, and how often?

Sort the room by contact, not by size. Handles, benches, mats and consoles are touched by every user, while the floor and the ceiling are not. A working schedule cleans the high-contact items between users where that is practical, and on a fixed round at least once a day for the machines that cannot be wiped between users.

Item Contact level Cleaning interval
Free-weight handles and bars High Between users, and on the daily round
Weight benches and machine seats High Between users, and on the daily round
Mats and blocks High, shared skin contact After each use, laundered or wiped
Machine consoles and screens High On the daily round
Cardio handles and rails High On the daily round
Floors and mirrors Low Daily or as needed

Which disinfectant is right for gym equipment?

A surface is only disinfected when the product and the contact time on its label are both respected. In Canada a disinfectant carries a Drug Identification Number, a different standing from a general cleaning product, and the number is the quickest way to tell the two apart on a shelf. Choose one product for soft surfaces and one for hard equipment, and keep both at the station where they are used rather than in a cupboard.

How should shared towels be handled?

A shared towel is a shared surface. Where a studio offers towels, each towel is laundered after a single use and stored away from benches and floors. Many gyms drop the towel service and offer single-use dry wipes at a station instead, which removes the sorting problem that laundry creates. Whichever route a studio takes, a bin for used towels and wipes sits next to the station.

What does the cleaning round need to record?

Write down the area, the time, the product and the initials of the worker. The record tells a new staff member what has already been done and shows that the schedule was followed when a member asks. A written log kept at the desk is enough.

Doing the round means handling wipes, gloves and waste. Keep a tub of disinfecting wipes at each station, a case of disposable dry wipes for single-use towel stations, and a carton of heavy-duty nitrile gloves for the worker doing the round. Used wipes and gloves go into a lined bin, and leak-proof waste bags stop a torn liner from spilling a bin on the way out. The cleaning lines sit in the cleaning and disinfecting range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should gym equipment be cleaned?

Shared equipment should be wiped between users, and every machine and weight handle cleaned on a set schedule at least once a day. Handles, benches, mats and consoles carry far more contact than the floor, so they set the round.

What disinfectant should a gym use on equipment?

A product with a Drug Identification Number, used at the contact time on its label. A wipe labelled as a disinfectant is different from a plain cleaning wipe, so check the label rather than assuming a quick wipe has disinfected the surface.

Should a gym offer shared towels?

Shared towels are hard to police, so most gyms move to single-use wipes or a bring-your-own-towel rule. Where a towel service continues, towels must be laundered after every use and stored away from floors and benches.

What should a gym write down after cleaning?

The area cleaned, the time, the product used and who did it. A short log kept at the desk shows the round was done on the days it was scheduled.
