PLA (polylactic acid) is derived from corn starch, not petroleum. Under industrial composting conditions, it breaks down within 90-180 days. The trade-off is cost and, for some products, a shorter shelf life.
Our recommendation: start with PLA bed sheets and gowns—the cost premium is modest, the environmental impact is real, and the clinical performance is equivalent to standard materials. Underpads in PLA are significantly more expensive, so they make sense only if sustainability is a formal procurement requirement.
